Teeth Whitening: Professional vs At-Home Kits

Whitening strips, LED gadgets and whitening toothpastes promise a brighter smile for a fraction of the cost. So is professional teeth whitening really worth it? Here is what you need to know before you decide.

What the law says

In the UK, teeth whitening is classed as dentistry. Products that contain or release between 0.1% and 6% hydrogen peroxide can only be provided by a registered dental professional after an examination, and never to anyone under 18. Products sold directly to the public are limited to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, which is far too weak to make a meaningful difference to the colour of your teeth.

Whitening offered by beauticians, in salons or at kiosks is illegal, and it can cause chemical burns to the gums, sensitivity and uneven results. Some products sold online contain illegal levels of peroxide, and others rely on acidic ingredients that can damage enamel.

What at-home kits can and cannot do

Most shop-bought kits and whitening toothpastes remove surface stains from tea, coffee or red wine. That can make teeth look cleaner, but it does not change the natural shade of the tooth. One-size-fits-all trays and strips also struggle to hold gel evenly against every surface, which can leave patchy results and gel on the gums.

How professional whitening works

At Concept Dental we use a dentist-prescribed home whitening system with custom-fitted trays made precisely to the shape of your teeth. The trays hold a professional-strength gel evenly against every tooth while limiting contact with the gums. You wear them for a set time each day, and we monitor your progress along the way.

  • Safer: your teeth and gums are checked first, and any decay or gum problems are treated before whitening begins.
  • More predictable: prescribed concentrations and custom trays give an even, controlled result.
  • Longer-lasting: because the natural shade of the tooth is lightened, results last well beyond surface stain removal, and you can keep your trays for occasional top-ups.

Is whitening right for you?

Whitening works on natural enamel only. It will not change the colour of crowns, veneers, fillings or bonding, so if you have visible restorations we plan around them. Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy or for anyone under 18. Some temporary sensitivity is common during treatment and usually settles once it is complete.
