How Long Does Invisalign Really Take?

How long does Invisalign take? It is usually the first question patients ask, and the honest answer is that it depends on how far your teeth need to move. Here is a realistic timeline, from your first appointment to the retainer that keeps your new smile in place.

Typical treatment times

As a guide:

  • Mild cases, such as small gaps, slight crowding or teeth that have moved after previous braces, often take around three to six months.
  • Moderate cases commonly take six to twelve months.
  • More complex cases, including some bite corrections, can take twelve to eighteen months or longer.

Your own estimate comes from your treatment plan, which we go through with you before you commit.

Step by step: from scan to retainer

  1. Consultation and digital scan. We check that your teeth and gums are healthy and take a digital scan of your teeth, with no messy impressions.
  2. Your 3D plan. The scan becomes a 3D treatment plan, so you can see the expected result before you start. Any adjustments are made at this stage.
  3. Fitting your first aligners. Your aligners usually arrive within a few weeks. We fit them and, where needed, add small tooth-coloured attachments that help the aligners grip.
  4. Active treatment. You move on to a new set of aligners about every week at home, with regular reviews at the practice to keep everything on track.
  5. Refinements, if needed. Teeth do not always move exactly as predicted, so a short series of extra aligners can fine-tune the result.
  6. Retention. Once your teeth are in position, retainers keep them there. Most people wear them at night for the long term.

What speeds treatment up, and what slows it down

The biggest factor is you. Aligners only work while they are in, so they need to be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day, and taken out only to eat, brush and drink anything other than water. Other factors include:

  • how complex the planned movements are
  • attending your review appointments
  • keeping your teeth and gums healthy, as decay or gum problems may need treating first
  • whether refinements are needed at the end

Is Invisalign worth the wait?

For most patients, yes. The aligners are virtually invisible and there are no food restrictions. Straightening your teeth first can also reduce, or even remove, the need for cosmetic work later as part of a wider smile makeover.
