If the thought of a dental appointment makes your heart race, you are far from alone. Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people put off care, sometimes for years. It does not have to stay that way, and sedation for nervous patients is only one of the ways we can help.
Start with the right environment
For many nervous patients, the biggest difference is not medication at all but time and understanding. At Concept Dental, appointments are unhurried. We explain every step before we carry it out, agree a signal you can use to pause at any moment, and never pressure you into treatment you are not ready for. There is no judgement about how long it has been since your last visit.
What is conscious sedation?
For patients who need more than reassurance, conscious sedation can help. It uses medication to bring on a deeply relaxed state while you stay awake and able to respond to your dentist. Many patients find that time seems to pass quickly, and they remember little of the appointment afterwards.
Sedation is not a general anaesthetic. You keep breathing on your own and stay responsive throughout, and a local anaesthetic keeps the area being treated numb.
Who can it help?
- people with a strong fear of dental treatment or needles
- anyone who has had a difficult experience at the dentist in the past
- patients with a sensitive gag reflex
- longer or more complex procedures, such as implant placement or extractions
What to expect on the day
Before sedation, we review your medical history and any medication you take to make sure it is safe for you. Depending on the type of sedation, you may need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you. You may also need to avoid driving, operating machinery or signing important documents for 24 hours. We give you clear written instructions before and after your appointment.
