When Is a Filling Needed?

Your Filling Appointment
We examine the tooth and explain what we find. If we need X-rays to see how far the decay goes, we take them first.
We numb the area with local anaesthetic and give it time to work, so you are comfortable before we start.
We remove the decay, keeping the preparation as small as possible, then build the composite filling in layers, hardening each with a curing light.
We shape and polish the filling, check your bite and talk you through aftercare, including any sensitivity to expect.
How Long Do Fillings Last?
With good home care and regular hygienist appointments, composite fillings can last many years. We check all your existing fillings at every examination so we can spot any that are starting to fail before they cause bigger problems.

Does getting a filling hurt?
The area is numbed first, so most patients feel no pain during the procedure. Some mild sensitivity afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days. If it lasts longer than a week, contact us.
Can old amalgam fillings be replaced?
Yes. If an old filling is failing or you’d prefer a more natural look, we can replace it with tooth-coloured composite. We assess this case by case at your dental examination, and it isn’t always necessary if the filling is still sound.
What if I need a large filling? Could a crown be better?
For heavily broken-down teeth, a crown can protect the tooth better than a large filling. Crowns start from £650, and we’ll give you an honest recommendation with written prices for both options.
What if I am anxious about having a filling?
